Obituary

Duane Alan Barnett passed away July 30, 2019. He was born September 27, 1932 to Gladys and Delmar Barnett, at home, in Ottawa County Michigan.

Duane was a tremendous father and mentor; he really was very highly thought of by most who knew him. He was a very kind, loving and tender person. He was a great husband who loved his wife faithfully till the very end. One of the things that was outstanding about him was he had committed his life early to Jesus and the Seventh-day Adventist church and never wavered on his commitment.

According to Duane, he met the love of his life, Anne Hamstra in Cradle Roll at Church. Unknown to Anne when he left college during his freshman year, he told his college roommate that he was going to go home and marry Anne Hamstra. And sure, enough they got married December 28, 1952. His love and dedication to her was inspiring. They were happily married for 66 years.

Duane received his high school diploma from Cedar Lake Academy. He eventually went back to Andrews University after having three of his children and got a degree in Elementary Education and Minor in History. Latter while working as principal in the Grand Ledge telemetry school he received his master’s degree at Michigan State University in Administration in Education. He then moved his family to Jackson Michigan and served as the principal of the elementary school. Because of his masters he received a call to be principal of Hellen Hyatt Elementary in Lincoln Nebraska. Five years later he then moved on to Cedar Brook which was a 1-10 school in Massachusetts. Six years later he returned to Michigan where he was the principal of the Adelphian Academy for two years. He was then asked to be the Associate Educational Superintendent in the Florida conference, where he worked for ten years. His final position was with the Iowa-Missouri conference as the Educational Superintendent until his retirement.

Duane and his wife loved to travel, and they visited every state at least two times and he fulfilled his bucket list of golfing in every state. They also travelled to Europe on three different occasions, Asia two different times visiting their kids who were student missionaries in Hong Kong and Macau. Also, the visited Majuro in the Marshall Islands where their daughter has once been a student missionary. All together they visited more than twenty countries, which gave them great world perspective.

Duane and Annie shared a great life together however there were some very difficult times as well. Their first-born son Duane Alan Jr. passed away just two days after birth. Later while moving from Michigan to Nebraska the moving van caught fire. Another great loss was the passing of their daughter.

Duane and Annie were blessed, they always had an open-door policy at their home. Not only did he and his wife care for elderly folds and foster children, they had numerous young people who came and lived with them for varying lengths of stay
.
Duane loved to have fun. He loved spending time with his family and friends. And if you were around him very long you would have been asked if you wanted to play a game. He loved all kinds of table games. He was tremendous athlete, he loved playing softball, golfing and rooting for the Detroit Tigers and Lions.

Duane was preceded in death by his son Duane Alan Jr., his brother Jerry Barnett, his parents, Gladys and Delmar Barnett, his two sisters Mary Teegarden and Kathryn Cash; his daughter, DeAnn Rogers.

He is survived by his wife, Annie Barnett; his sons, Dennis and wife Diane, Ed and wife Shirley; son-in-law Les Rogers; thirteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for 11:00 am Sunday August 4, 2019 at the Moberly Seventh-day Adventist Church 1410 McKinsey St, Moberly, Missouri.

Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to the Maranatha Adventist School and can be mailed to 1400 E. McKinsey St. Moberly, MO 65270

I just read the news of Duane's passing this morning. Duane was my superintendent while I taught in Missouri, and I truly appreciated working with him. I will miss him.

One of my warmest memories of Duane was as a toddler. We lived right across the street from the elementary school in Grand Ledge where he taught. I loved to climb up in his lap when my mother was busy assisting one of the other teachers. He also had a tremendous impact on our lives when Jeff was considering youth ministry. Duane advised him that our church school teachers are some of our most effective youth ministers. Jeff followed through on Duane’s advice and loved teaching, having an impact for eternity on many youth because of Duane’s advice and mentorship. What a day of rejoicing it will be when we all stand together around God’s throne and see the ripple effect that Duane’s life had on so many.
