Obituary for Dennis Laverne Maize

Dennis “Denny” Laverne Maize, 85, of Kirksville, Missouri passed away peacefully
surrounded by family at Northeast Regional Hospital in Kirksville, Missouri on Sunday
February 16, 2020.

He was born March 17, 1934 the son of Boyd Maize and Gladys Bradshaw in Kirksville,
Missouri and on March 26, 1956 he married Evelyn Patterson.

Denny is survived by his only daughter, Denise Hodges and husband Larry of Green
Castle, Missouri; granddaughter, Denita and husband Cody Gashwiler; one step
granddaughter, Mindy and husband Corey Shelton; one great granddaughter, Baylee
Gashwiler; sister, Carol Jean Maize of Kirksville, Missouri; brother, Leland Maize and
wife Cecille of Macon, Missouri; several nieces and nephews.

Denny spent his early years in Novinger and as a teen moved to Kirksville where he
lived out the rest of his life. He served his country by enlisting in the United States
Army. He served in the Korean war as a machine gunner. Upon returning to Kirksville
he became employed and worked for the Florsheim Shoe factory for many years until
his retirement.

Denny loved his family and friends, always had a good joke. He loved listening to
country music and dancing at the VFW. He also loved fishing and bird hunting. He
loved his brittany bird hunting dogs and raised many. After he retired, he mostly
enjoyed gardening and sitting outside under his shade tree tending to the garden. He
always had a beautiful garden and loved sharing his harvest with friends and family. He
resided at Highland Crest Assisted living the last 5 years and enjoyed sitting in the
lobby, visiting with friends, greeting anyone that walked in the door, and playing Bingo.
He was a hard-working man that was kind and giving. He always enjoyed visiting with
his family and friends and was extremely proud of his granddaughter and great-
granddaughter and loved spending time with them.

A memorial service with full military honors will be held at 10:00 am on Thursday,
February 20, 2020 at the Novinger Fire Station in Novinger, Missouri.
Dennis’s cremains will be placed next to his wife in the Wilsontown Cemetery near
LaPlata, Missouri at a later date.

Memorials are suggested to the family and may be entrusted to A Simplified Funeral
Solution in Green Castle, Missouri.
