Obituary for Neva Joyce Fiedler

Neva Joyce Moore was born at home in Greencastle Missouri on April 18, 1941 under the rheumy-eyed direction of Doc Shur. His scales only read to nine pounds so Mom’s birth weight is unknown. She joined her brother, Hallie DeWayne, and her parents Hallie and Thelma. Grandma and Grandpa were farmers, trappers, gardeners, and hard-working folks. They taught their daughter, Neva Joyce, the importance of fixing if it could be fixed, and saving if it could be saved.

She was a good student. Mom was both a fixer and a saver. She fixed and tailored clothing, she fixed fabulous meals and extraordinary desserts and cakes, she fixed walls and sidewalks and light switches, scraped knees and flower beds, and she saved lots of things. When Mom moved to the LaPlata Nursing Home and we were going through her belongings we found 72 extension cords, 39 pairs of white slacks, 361 pairs of shoes, 407 VHS movies and many more saved treasures. She had saved enough fabric and sewing notions to open her own shop.

Mom graduated from Novinger High School in 1959 but not before marrying her first love, Dickie Fiedler. They lived with Grandpa and Grandma until their move to the metropolis of Tipperary, Missouri before I was born. Mom stayed home and raised three daughters: Pam (Ray) Halstead, Kim Moore, and Candy (Chris) St. Clair. Mom taught us how to fix and save. We were good students. We lost Kim in 2015, and with that loss, a piece of Mom’s soul left us all.

Mom and Dad moved to LaPlata in 1966. They owned West Side Gun Shop and Barber Shop and Fiedler’s Pub and Grub. They had also called Kansas City and Shelbyville home.

Mom loved to travel. We would take family trips out west and then later in life Mom and Dad went on cruises and traveled with friends and family across the country or went camping with friends and family close to home.

After Dad passed, Mom met the second love of her life, Billy Dale Dixon at the VFW Hall in Chillicothe, Missouri. He made her smile again and that was good. Mom and Bill traveled all across the country and wintered in Gulf Shores, Alabama. They courted like teenagers for 18 years. Life and love was abundant. Mom lost Bill last year.

There are too many Neva Joyce stories to share in this little space. If you knew her, you know what I mean. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren have a plethora of memories and so the “living forever” scenario is a gimme.

Her grandchildren-legacy includes: Millicen(Jeff) Mitten and their children, Knightlee and Knixa, York (Caitlin) Halstead and their children: Kaden, Zandelyn, Avostyn, and Loughlin, Baylor Halstead and his son, Lyric, Bronson Moore and his son, Kershaw, Merzaydee Moore, Cinnamon St. Clair and Cutter St. Clair. Mom also leaves several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mom passed in her sleep on Saturday, June 20, the day before Father’s Day at the LaPlata Nursing Home. Twenty years earlier, on the Saturday before Father’s Day, Dad passed. Mom’s wishes were to be cremated. She’ll join Dad’s cremains in the closet and they will both be buried together in a private burial at a later date in Greencastle, Missouri. There will be no public service.

Candy and I want to thank all of you who touched her life, who helped with her care, and made her smile.
